Scope of Services:
AEM conducted a thorough site investigation at the P-2 Dump Site area along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The site has been historically used for the disposal of trash and materials during maintenance operations along the Parkway.
First AEM conducted an investigation to determine the approximate extent of buried waste material on site, using a backhoe. After the backhoe investigation, soil sampling investigation was performed to determine the extent of impacted soil. Petroleum-impacted soil was encountered at a paint waste disposal area and also at a separate trash/asphalt sealant disposal area on site.
AEM developed a remedial work plan based on the site investigation and sampling results. AEM then provided oversight and reporting documentation during the course of the remediation activities. Approximately 15 tons of paint waste/soil material and 200 tons of general waste/soil material were excavated and transported off site to an approved Subtitle D landfill disposal facility. In addition, approximately 20 cubic yards of miscellaneous surface debris (e.g., scrap metal, treated lumber, asphalt shingles, tires, etc.) were removed from the site and transported to the local County facility. During the course of remediation activities, erosion control measures were implemented at the request of the National Park Service, even though the disturbed acreage was below the threshold amount for State of North Carolina erosion and sediment control requirements.
The site was restored to the National Park Service’s specific seeding specifications. Upon project completion, the site was cleared of surface debris and petroleum-impacted soil and the original land surface grade had been restored. A final remediation report was then issued and preparations for project close-out initiated.
